Expected publication: February 26th 2019 by Scholastic

ADD TO GOODREADS

Sixteen years ago, rebellion swept the galaxy known as the Belt of Jewels. Every member of the royal family was murdered--down to their youngest child, Princess Anya--and the Union government rose in its place. But Stacia doesn't think much about politics. She spends her days half-wild, rambling her father's vineyard with her closest friends, Clio and Pol.

That all changes the day a Union ship appears in town, carrying the leader of the Belt himself, the Direktor Eminent. The Direktor claims that Princess Anya is alive, and that Stacia's sleepy village is a den of empire loyalists, intent on hiding her. When Stacia is identified as the lost princess, her provincial home explodes into a nightmare.

Pol smuggles her away to a hidden escape ship in the chaos, leaving Clio in the hands of the Union. With everything she knows threading away into stars, Stacia sets her heart on a single mission. She will find and rescue Clio, even with the whole galaxy on her trail.

My Rating: 5 stars

*****

Warcross, by Marie Lu is one of the best books I’ve read this year so far. I’m not a gamer, and I loved it, I guess that means if you’re a gamer, you will enjoy it even more.
There are so many good things to say about this book that I don’t even know where to start.
Marie Lu is such a wonderful storyteller and every world she creates is one where one wants to live.
From New York to Tokyo and the virtual reality of Warcross, each description is vivid and atmospheric; it’ll make you be a part of it.

And if a brilliant world-building wasn’t enough, the cast of tough and diverse characters will win you over.
I loved every one of these characters, even Zero, the antihero.
Emika and Hideo are (were?) my favorite and I loved the dynamics between the two of them.
One of the things I liked the most about Warcross is that even though this book is an action packed roller-coaster, it also has some very emotional moments, and  some of them almost made me cry.
In a world where virtual reality is their reality, these characters gave us precious moments of humanity.

To be honest, I was a bit worried about the romance when I realized who the love interest was. But their relationship was slow burn and sweet… but this is Marie Lu we’re talking about, so of course, there’s more to that.

And the ending was EPIC. There were some unexpected twists and turns, and even though one of them wasn’t that surprising, it makes the wait for the next book feel longer.

Once again, Marie Lu delivers a story full of action, friendship, betrayals and the promise of something better to come.

Some Books Ago: Illusive (Illusive #1) by Emily Lloyd-Jones

Some Books Ago is a shout out to all those books published some years ago. I don't want you to forget them!

I was reading reviews for Emily's new book The Hearts We Sold when I saw this cover and it made me remember how much I wanted to read this book when it was released. I still didn't have the chance, but Illusive sounds awesome, and I hope I can read it some day.
And if you haven't, make sure to add it to your TBR!

It was published on July 15th 2014 by Little, Brown and Company

Summary:

THEY ARE YOUNG.

THEY ARE CRIMINALS.

THEY ARE IMMUNE.

When the MK virus swept across the planet, a vaccine was created to stop the epidemic, but it came with some unexpected side effects. A small percentage of the population developed superhero-like powers, and Americans suffering from these so-called adverse effects were given an ultimatum: Serve the country or be declared a traitor.

Some people chose a third option: live a life of crime.

Seventeen-year-old Ciere Giba has the handy ability to change her appearance at will. She's what's known as an illusionist. She's also a thief. After crossing a gang of mobsters, Ciere must team up with a group of fellow superpowered criminals on a job that most would have considered impossible: a hunt for the formula that gave them their abilities. It was supposedly destroyed years ago - but what if it wasn't?

Government agents are hot on their trail, and the lines between good and bad, us and them, and freedom and entrapment are blurred as Ciere and the rest of her crew become embroiled in a deadly race that could cost them their lives.

Zara Cole has been in and out of New Detroit’s rehab facilities for treatment of her antisocial disorder. There’s no adjusting Zara’s attitude, though. A painful past has made her stronger than most, which is why she chose life in the Zone instead moving with her family to Mars. In her eyes, living inside a dome isn’t much better than a prison cell.

Still, when Zara commits a crime that has her running scared, jail might be exactly where she’s headed. Instead Zara is recruited into the Honors, an elite team of humans selected by the Leviathan–a race of sentient alien ships—to explore the outer reaches of the universe as their passengers.

Zara seizes the chance to flee Earth’s dangers, but when she meets Nadim, the alien ship she’s assigned to along with fellow Honor Beatriz, Zara starts to feel at home for the first time, along with a devotion she’s never experienced before. Yet nothing—not her Honors training or her street smarts—could have prepared her for the dark, dangerous truths that lurk behind the glitter of starlight.

Honor Among Thieves is the first book in a daring new sci-fi series by bestselling authors Rachel Caine and Ann Aguirre.

Waiting on Wednesday: Zero Repeat Forever (The Nahx Invasions #1) by Gabrielle Prendergast

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine

 What I'm waiting for...

He has no voice, or name, only a rank, Eighth. He doesn’t know the details of the mission, only the directives that hum in his mind.

Dart the humans. Leave them where they fall.

His job is to protect his Offside. Let her do the shooting.

Until a human kills her…

Sixteen year-old Raven is at summer camp when the terrifying armored Nahx invade, annihilating entire cities, taking control of the Earth. Isolated in the wilderness, Raven and her friends have only a fragment of instruction from the human resistance.

Shelter in place.

Which seems like good advice at first. Stay put. Await rescue. Raven doesn’t like feeling helpless but what choice does she have?

Then a Nahx kills her boyfriend.

Thrown together in a violent, unfamiliar world, Eighth and Raven should feel only hate and fear. But when Raven is injured, and Eighth deserts his unit, their survival comes to depend on trusting each other…

Hi there, bookish friends!
I’m back from a mini hiatus. Turns out I finally cancelled my internet subscription (the one I complained about all the time for years!). It’s been hard, because I don’t have internet at home anymore, but I’m looking for a better subscription available in my zone.
Anyway, today I’m looking forward to reading Zero Repeat Forever. I haven’t read much about this book, but it was on my Goodreads recs, and it sounds really interesting, so we’ll see.

The Love Interest by Cale Dietrich

 The Love Interest
by Cale Dietrich
Source: ARC provided for review, thank you!
My Rating: 4 stars
Summary:
There is a secret organization that cultivates teenage spies. The agents are called Love Interests because getting close to people destined for great power means getting valuable secrets.
Caden is a Nice: The boy next door, sculpted to physical perfection. Dylan is a Bad: The brooding, dark-souled guy, and dangerously handsome. The girl they are competing for is important to the organization, and each boy will pursue her. Will she choose a Nice or the Bad?
Both Caden and Dylan are living in the outside world for the first time. They are well-trained and at the top of their games. They have to be – whoever the girl doesn’t choose will die.
What the boys don’t expect are feelings that are outside of their training. Feelings that could kill them both.

****

The Love Interest by Cale Dietrich was such a fun and fast paced read. And what a surprise it was.
You might read the plot superficially and think "Ugh! Triangles!" Yes! This is a book about love triangles without a love triangle.

The Love Interest takes all the love triangle tropes and turns them into something really fun to read.
Caden and Dylan are love interests, but while Caden is a Nice (you know, the cute good boy), Dylan is a Bad (the tortured soul), except Dylan is not as bad as it seems.
When they're chosen to be Love Interests of a young scientist, Juliet, Caden and Dylan have to try their best to win her heart, because the one she doesn't pick, die.
I don't think this is a spoiler anymore, but if you haven't figured it out yet, Caden and Dylan fall for each other. And since the moment they met, we know this romance is doomed.
I loved how fun was this book. I hate love triangles and this book made me remember why. In The Love Interest every encounter between the Chosen and the Love Interests was staged but it also every YA love triangle I've read. It was like a good joke.
This was a light and fresh read so I didn't mind that the characters weren't deep or have strong personalities. They felt a little flat, but it was understandable because they were "trained" to be who they were.
I loved the characters anyway, I liked the plot and some of the twists made it a page turner.

But I have to admit that I hated the ending. Everything about this book was amazing until "the last battle"
The ending felt rushed and incredibly unrealistic. The epilogue takes place 5 years in the future, so I was left with a lot of unanswered questions and not satisfied at all.

Anyway, this was a lovely read and I would recommend it if you're looking for a fresh and cute read, or a contemporary with some sci-fic in it.
