Some Books Ago: Ashfall by Mike Mullin

Some Books Ago is a shout out to all those books published some years ago. I don't want you to forget them!

I don't remember much about this book because I read it a long time ago. But if you love stories about  survival and natural disasters, then you're going to love this one no matter the date! The only complain I had back then is that it was too disturbing, but I don't think that would be a problem now. Have you read it?

Today I want to talk about Ashfall by Mike Mullin. I read this book some years ago and I really loved it. It was a touching read, but it has a lot of action as well. I don't remember much about, but if you haven't read it, then you really have to check it out!

My thoughts

It’s always hard to say goodbye to your favorite series. That’s why it took me so long to read Sunrise.
I had the chance to read the eARC, but I didn’t... because I didn’t want to say goodbye yet.
But I finally forced myself to do it, and I’m happy I did because it was better than I expected.
Sunrise was the perfect ending for this series. It was hopeful and the development of the plot was just as great as I expected.
Alex and Darla are still one of my favorite couples, they’re friends, they’re partners, and they love each other in a very mature way.
I don’t really love the secondary characters. I only cared about Alex and Darla, the world-building and the writing. Anyway, each character was different and well created.
Mike Mullin created a perfect world after the events of Ashfall. 

It was a strong conclusion, a satisfying ending. After all the brutally there’s always the glimmer of hope about a long term future.
I also loved how realistic the book was about the feelings. The main characters were too young when it all started, we come to see how the tragedy affect them, how sad is to be a pillar, to try to survive every day and not just to be a teenager.
Darla is one of the strongest girls I ever read. Sometimes I feel like she was the strongest character in the series. She was a truly heroine. 

This was a hard read. And these series are an action packed ride. Cruel, brutal and realistic.
Sunrise is the perfect ending. Great plot, great characters, a fast passed read. Mike Mullin created an emotional roller-coaster. A perfectly written story and one of the best post-apocalyptical books of these days.

Cover #1.

The color: So. Very. Pretty. Those shades of gray and... brown? are awesome! That made me think of ashes without reading the title, it was a very pretty election of color.

The models: Perfect as well. Plus, I love the way Darla's hair looks almost dirty (I see it that way). Yes, they are Alex and Darla!

The background: Is that a wall and a mirror? Nevermind! it seems destructed, it's the world after the volcano's eruption.

The font: It's very simple, but since this book isn't all shiny and happy, it is thoughtful.

Cover #2

The color: That blue is amazing! there is nothing else I can say, very eye catching! Sober and elegant.

The models: Are the hands the models? Oh, no sure. Thought it's exactly what the book can means, the joining between people to survive a tragedy... but... I would have prefered to see the hands of young people, like Alex, and those hands don't look young (believe me, I see hands everyday!).

The background: That's the ash covering all. Great!

The font: It's the same of the other cover, I think. So, I say the same.

 Cover #3

The color: What a wonderful thing! It makes me think of fire and darkness.

The models: No models, but the city looks creepy and sad. (Until now, I haven't realized a city could look sad).

The background: Again, thoughtful! The margins represent ash, or that's what I think. So, it's perfect.

The font: Well, since this cover is less sad and more fashionable, I think that the font could have been different. It's not bad, but CENIZAS in white and not as cool as CENIZAS in gray.

 

All of them are pretty. I had a difficult time picking one of them to talk about the book I was reading in my reading club. But after thinking about that a lot.
