ARC Review: Seven Black Diamonds by Melissa Marr

Seven Black Diamonds
by Melissa Marr
Source: Huge thanks to Harper Teen and Edelweiss
My Rating: 3 stars
Summary:
Lilywhite Abernathy is a criminal—she’s half human, half fae, and since the time before she was born, a war has been raging between humans and faeries. The Queen of Blood and Rage, ruler of the fae courts, wants to avenge the tragic death of her heir due to the actions of reckless humans.
Lily’s father has always shielded her, but when she’s sent to the prestigious St. Columba’s school, she’s delivered straight into the arms of a fae sleeper cell—the Black Diamonds. The Diamonds are planted in the human world as the sons and daughters of the most influential families and tasked with destroying it from within. Against her will, Lilywhite’s been chosen to join them...and even the romantic attention of the fae rock singer Creed Morrison isn’t enough to keep Lily from wanting to run back to the familiar world she knows.

***

I’m a huge fan of Marissa Marr. Wicked Lovely was the first books about faeries that I read.  I read the next books in the series years after that and I still loved them. I also adored Made For You, Melissa’s contemporary thrilled.
So, of course I was excited to know she was writing more faeries books.
Sadly, I didn’t love Seven Black Diamonds as much as I hoped.
Let me tell you why.
The book started with Eilidh’s POV. An introduction to The Queen of Blood and Rage (I love that title), the Sleepers (terrorist killing humans for the Queen, aka: the Seven Black Diamonds) and how the Courts are working.
But in the second chapter we are introduced to Lily, the main character, and it was bad. She’s the daughter of a crime lord, and half fae. In that chapter, it’s her birthday party, where she meets a famous singer, Creed Morrison. She’s a huge fan of him because he’s a half fae, like her. And when they meet, it’s almost like love at first sight. They only meet for one night, a few hours but they already talk about a connection. But… I wasn’t able to find even 1 remarkable thing about him.
In the next two or three chapters, there’s a new change of POV, and that was absolutely confusing. The narrators start throwing a lot of names, like if I already knew them all, and I kept wondering: “Wait? So, they already know her?”
It felt chaotic, and the worst what that I was loving the other narrators, except for Lily, and she’s like the center of everything. Add to that the fact that there’s some kind of love triangle. I was about to DNF.
But I don’t DNF ARC’s that I request. So, I kept on reading.

I disliked a lot of things, but while I continued reading, I found some things that I loved. Like the politics of the Hidden Lands, the war between humans and fae, the mentions of The Queen… and a few twists I wasn’t expecting.
Zephyr, the leader of the Sleepers wasn’t that bad. He’s the other one involved in the love triangle. And even though he’s loyal to the Queen I found him better than the others.
So, yes, my favorite character was The Queen of Blood and Rage, and yes, I liked the faeries a lot more than the Seven Black Diamonds.
Marissa Marr’s writing and descriptions are gorgeous and magical, but my problem was that I didn’t care about Lily, and like I said before, even if there are more narrators, she’s the center of everything.

While I don’t think I’ll read the next books in the series, I recommend this book to everyone who loves “bad” faeries. They’re tricky, and beautiful and cruel.
And there might be a chance you also love the Sleepers.

Melissa Marr returns to faery in a dramatic story of the precarious space between two worlds and the people who must thrive there. The combination of ethereal fae powers, tumultuous romance, and a bloodthirsty faery queen will have longtime fans and new readers at the edge of their seats.

ARC Review: Made for You by Melissa Marr

Made for you
Author: Melissa Marr
Pages: 368
My Rating: 5 stars
Source: ARC provided by the author. Thank you!
Summary:
Bestselling author of the Wicked Lovely books Melissa Marr’s first contemporary YA novel is a twisted southern gothic tale of obsession, romance, and murder. A killer is obsessed with Eva Tilling. Can she stop him, or will he claim her?
When Eva Tilling wakes up in the hospital, she’s confused—who in her sleepy little North Carolina town could have hit her with their car? And why? But before she can consider the question, she finds that she’s awoken with a strange new skill: the ability to foresee people’s deaths when they touch her. While she is recovering from the hit-and-run, Nate, an old flame, reappears, and the two must traverse their rocky past as they figure out how to use Eva’s power to keep her friends—and themselves—alive. But while Eva and Nate grow closer, the killer grows increasingly frantic in his attempt to get to Eva.
For the first time, New York Times bestselling author Melissa Marr has applied her extraordinary talent to contemporary realism. Chilling twists, unrequited obsession, and high-stakes romance drive this Gothic, racy thriller—a story of small-town oppression and salvation. Melissa’s fans, and every YA reader, will find its wild ride enthralling.

Made for You by Melissa Marr is a dark thriller with amazing characters and an incredible plot.
It’s impossible to put it down. It was an adrenaline roller-coaster, with a phenomenal and heart-stopping plot, full of suspense and a twisted killer that will have you on the edge of your seat.

I was swept away by this story. It’s the best of its kind that I’ve ever read.
Honestly, this book blew my mind.
Made for You is told in three different POVs, one of those is “Judge” the killer. I kid you not. Judge is my favorite character of this book. Yes, the killer.
Eva, the main character is a strong girl, mature and likeable.
Grace, Eva’s best friend, who has the other POV, is also a strong and smart character.
Melissa Marr did an excellent job creating characters so different and complex.
Something I found interesting and refreshing about Made for You is that… this is not that kind of book where the adults seems inexistence while the teenagers die. Eva’s parents are great in their own way. And so is every adult mentioned in the story, even the bad ones.
Made for you has parents action, Police action, and teen action altogether. It looked realistic. It was satisfying.

Also, the world-building of this book is kind of gothic, modern but classic.

What I didn't like:
The romance. Nate, who’s the love interest, was kind of… normal? The relationship between Eva and him was a little fast and open. That wasn’t really bad; I just couldn’t care about their romance, though this book is not about romance.
And there wasn't any explanation about Eva's visions, just like those Final Destination movies, where you simply don't know why.

The ending was surprising but not incredible shocking.
Every single time I read Judge’s POV I couldn’t help trying to guess who the killer was, and when I discovered… well, indeed, it was unexpected. But I was expecting something bloodier and jaw-dropping.
What’s amazing, I have to say it again. Is that Made for You is realistic and rational. And the ending was just like that. Not a killer ending but a perfect one.

Made for You is the best thriller I’ve read this year.

My Never-ending Booknotes: Made for you by Melissa Marr.

My Never-ending Booknotes is a weekly meme created by my awesome friend April @ Books 4 Juliet where we can share our favorites quotes or conversation from a book.
If you want to join, just go HERE and have fun.

When the assistant of Melissa send me an eARC of this book I was so excited that I devoured it right away!
It's dark and thrilling, unlike everything I ever read.
I wish that I could tell more about it, but it was a surprise and I want you to be surprised just like me.
So, my favorite quote is a light one. About friendship.

"Some friendships work because they have so much in common; we work because we have so many differences. We fill in each other’s gaps"

Book review: Darkest Mercy be Melissa Marr

Darkest Mercy (Wicked lovely #5)
Author: Melissa Marr
Goodreads AVG Rating: 4.13
Pages: 327
Summary: Add here
The Summer King is missing; the Dark Court is bleeding; and a stranger walks the streets of Huntsdale, his presence signifying the deaths of powerful fey.
Aislinn tends to the Summer Court, searching for her absent king and yearning for Seth. Torn between his new queen and his old love, Keenan works from afar to strengthen his court against the coming war. Donia longs for fiery passion even as she coolly readies the Winter Court for battle. And Seth, sworn brother of the Dark King and heir to the High Queen, is about to make a mistake that could cost his life.
Love, despair, and betrayal ignite the Faery Courts, and in the final conflict, some will win . . . and some will lose "everything."

My thoughts.

Darkest Mercy is the last book in the Wicked Lovely Series by  Melissa Marr.
This book is about the last battle between the courts of the fairies against Bananach AKA--> War.
To start, I must say that this series is one of my favorites. After the Iron Fey, Wicked Lovely is the best series about fey I have read.
The author takes us to the dark and elegant world of fairies. Summer Court, Winter and Dark Court, as well as the incredible scenery of Faerie.
One of the hardest things to write my opinion about the books that I liked most, is being able to say exactly what I feel, because my punctuation for a book is based only on what "that" book made me feel. And Darkest Mercy definitely made me feel many good things.
Among those good things, I felt very curious and in love with the characters, so well created in this wonderful story.
I loved the different changes in the POV that made the author. As you must know the previous books in the series are not narrated from the same perspective. So this story had to close each of the previously love stories.
As always my favorite was Aislin’s POV. Seth began to become a mystery, something I really loved it! Because he wasn’t the same guy from the first book.
We also know a more romantic side of Keenan. Donia, was still the strongest character and the best defined.
There are also POV of Irial and Nial well as an appearance of Leslie, absolutely necessary to close the last circle.
In fact, this book has been the most changeable, in terms of POV I've read, but that does not bother me, like other books did. I was Glad to know the outcome for each of the main characters.
The writing is beautiful and addictive, the characters much more mature and exquisite…
I have read many ends of series and trilogies and Darkest Mercy is one of the best of them.
This book made me feel excited and in love. This one made me believe in fairies.
Fully recommended.
