My Rating: 5 stars
Summary:
For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.
Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.

*****

Warcross, by Marie Lu is one of the best books I’ve read this year so far. I’m not a gamer, and I loved it, I guess that means if you’re a gamer, you will enjoy it even more.
There are so many good things to say about this book that I don’t even know where to start.
Marie Lu is such a wonderful storyteller and every world she creates is one where one wants to live.
From New York to Tokyo and the virtual reality of Warcross, each description is vivid and atmospheric; it’ll make you be a part of it.

And if a brilliant world-building wasn’t enough, the cast of tough and diverse characters will win you over.
I loved every one of these characters, even Zero, the antihero.
Emika and Hideo are (were?) my favorite and I loved the dynamics between the two of them.
One of the things I liked the most about Warcross is that even though this book is an action packed roller-coaster, it also has some very emotional moments, and  some of them almost made me cry.
In a world where virtual reality is their reality, these characters gave us precious moments of humanity.

To be honest, I was a bit worried about the romance when I realized who the love interest was. But their relationship was slow burn and sweet… but this is Marie Lu we’re talking about, so of course, there’s more to that.

And the ending was EPIC. There were some unexpected twists and turns, and even though one of them wasn’t that surprising, it makes the wait for the next book feel longer.

Once again, Marie Lu delivers a story full of action, friendship, betrayals and the promise of something better to come.

My Thoughts On: The Rose Society & The Midnight Star by Marie Lu

Source: bought.
My rating: 5 stars.

 *****

I read The Young Elites by Marie Lu a few months after it was published. I liked it a lot. But I didn’t love it. I was one of those people who thought Adelina wasn’t a real villain, as everyone made me believe. I thought it was a marketing strategy, so I felt kind of cheated. When The Rose Society came, I didn’t have time to read it, I didn’t care about it enough.

I don’t remember why I read the first chapter of The Rose Society two weeks ago. I just remember I didn’t know what to read. It took me so long to read this sequel, but as soon as I finished it, I couldn't wait to read The Midnight Star.
This was definitely love at second sight. Adelina was finally the villain everyone was rooting for. The plot was unpredictable and every one of the characters was gorgeous and ferocious.
Since I read them right after the other, The Rose Society and The Midnight Star feel like one big book to me. It made so happy to see the character development and how well the world-building was created.
I loved these books, I loved the world these characters live in, I loved the writing and I loved the Elite’s journey. I have to admit it, I loved Teren, best villain ever.
I love ALL the characters!

When I picked up The Rose Society I wasn’t expecting all the feels. The ending was just as bittersweet and perfect as Legend’s. I’m so glad I got the chance to read this series. I’m sure I’ll be re-reading it again since now it’s one of my favorite series.

I highly recommend it if you haven’t read The Young Elites. If you loved Legend, you’ll love this one, too. You won’t be disappointed!

Mini-review: Champion by Marie Lu

Champion (Legend #3)
Author: Marie Lu
Pages: 369
My rating: 6 stars/ special rating
Buy it: Amazon/ B&N/ TBD
Summary:
He is a Legend.
She is a Prodigy.
Who will be Champion?
June and Day have sacrificed so much for the people of the Republic—and each other—and now their country is on the brink of a new existence. June is back in the good graces of the Republic, working within the government’s elite circles as Princeps-Elect, while Day has been assigned a high-level military position. But neither could have predicted the circumstances that will reunite them: just when a peace treaty is imminent, a plague outbreak causes panic in the Colonies, and war threatens the Republic’s border cities. This new strain of plague is deadlier than ever, and June is the only one who knows the key to her country’s defense. But saving the lives of thousands will mean asking the one she loves to give up everything. With heart-pounding action and suspense, Marie Lu’s bestselling trilogy draws to a stunning conclusion.

One of my favorite reviewers (Ari @ Reading After Midnight) said about this book:

“Perfect books are just perfect”

And I couldn’t agree more.
This ending was perfect. These books were perfect.
After reading Champion, the Legend Trilogy became my favorite dystopia. I feel like these books have their own heart.
I don’t even know what to say. I can’t find the words to tell you how good Champion was.
Lately I’ve been reading a bunch of disappointing endings, and I was utterly scared that Champion was one of those… but it wasn’t.
I had to “schedule” this book to read it. Because I was able to feel the heartbreak even when I read the synopsis. I was scared, I was terrified, and I didn’t want to say goodbye.
That was the worst part: I didn’t want to say goodbye. It took me three days to read this book; it was because I savored every line, every single word. I forced myself to read slowly, to stop.

If there’s one thing I have to highlight about Champion is that it was unexpected. I was totally wrong about everything. It surprised me and it makes me so sad and so happy.
This book created balance. This book was full of hope. This book made me see things I didn’t see before.
Champion broke and heart, Champion made me cry and smile at the same time.

Champion by Marie Lu is the best ending I’ve ever read. Simply like that!
