The Becoming of Noah Shaw (The Shaw Confessions #1) by Michelle Hodkin

The Becoming of Noah Shaw (The Shaw Confessions #1)
by Michelle Hodkin
Source: eARC provided for review, thank you!
My Rating: 4.5 stars
Summary:
In the first book of the Shaw Confessions, the companion series to the New York Times bestselling Mara Dyer novels, old skeletons are laid bare and new promises prove deadly. This is what happens after happily ever after.
Everyone thinks seventeen-year-old Noah Shaw has the world on a string.
They’re wrong.
Mara Dyer is the only one he trusts with his secrets and his future.
He shouldn’t.
And both are scared that uncovering the truth about themselves will force them apart.
They’re right.

****

I don’t think I’ll ever be able to write a full, long review of this book because it’d be full of spoilers. So, just let me tell you this: The Becoming of Noah Shaw will NOT disappoint you.

If you enjoyed the Mara Dyer trilogy, then you’ll definitely enjoy this one, too. It has all the things that made The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer unforgettable: nerdy conversations, gore, mystery, darkness and that passionate and all consuming love between Mara and Noah.
Please be aware, the first thing I noticed when I started reading it were the trigger warnings. I don’t even remember all of them, but if the first page (on my kindle) was full of trigger warnings, then you know this is going to be fucked up.

The plot was just as intriguing and puzzling as the previous trilogy, and even though there are answers to questions from Mara’s books, the mystery never ends.
Michelle Hodkin brings back her old characters and puts them in way more complicated situations, testing them, and testing us.

While there isn’t a love triangle at sight (thank you!) the ending is still heartbreaking and full of angst. I am actually dying to read the next book, but I wasn’t expecting less.

There is.

She doesn’t stop to think about where her quest for the truth might lead.
She should.

She never had to imagine how far she would go for vengeance.
She will now.

Loyalties are betrayed, guilt and innocence tangle, and fate and chance collide in this shocking conclusion to Mara Dyer’s story.
Retribution has arrived.

And while we wait....

Book Review: The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

The Evolution of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer #2)
Author: Michelle Hodkin
Pages: 544
Goodreads AVG Rating: 4.46
Summary: / Add here.
Mara Dyer once believed she could run from her past.
She can’t.
She used to think her problems were all in her head.
They aren’t.
She couldn’t imagine that after everything she’s been through, the boy she loves would still be keeping secrets.
She’s wrong.
In this gripping sequel to The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, the truth evolves and choices prove deadly. What will become of Mara Dyer next?

My POV

My feelings:
Mara Dyer is a twisted story, elegant and very suspenseful.
Once again Michelle Hodkin created a world so well constructed that leaves you shocked and with your heart hammering in a race of dementia.
Each page contains a mystery, a secret you crave to discover.
Evil genius. Insane. Heartbreaker. Mara Dyer is that and much more.

The plot:
I could dare to say that the plot is much more thought in this book than in the first one. Although we do not know to distinguish reality from illusion, it shows in every word that the author knows her stuff. We can see how well we have been entangled in the darkness of Mara’s mind and each of the things going on around her.
Life or death, magic or lies, insanity or sanity.

The characters:
Mara: Completely adorable. No matter what she is, no matter the things she has done, no matter if Mara is insane. All that matters is how Mara does reach our heart. Because she is a strong girl, it has been shown in every action, in every thought. But she is damaged and not afraid to ask for help. Mara does not pretend that all is well (not in front of us, anyway) and isn’t buried in her little ball of misery. Mara knows she needs help and she needs Noah to stand beside her in those horrible things that happen in her life. This makes her a person as real as any other I've known. She’s authentic just like any of us.
Noah: Charming, sexy, funny, strong and loyal. Any guy would move away from a person as problematic as the girl he loves, but instead Noah stays beside her and does everything in his power to protect her and give her some peace and normalcy she needs.
The book also got us to know his dark side and a little more of his secrets. Noah, it's so easy to love!
Mara's family: I am terribly in love with Daniel! I cannot believe I had not noticed him until now. Daniel is a loving brother, perfect, and despite not believing in the "hallucinations" of her sister he’s always by her side to give her the love she needs. Just like their parents.
Jude: Is Jude really alive or is just a hallucination or ghost haunting Mara and bringing her into the depths of madness? No matter, what does matter is that Jude is a disgusting character.

The romance:
Oh dear, the romance in the part of Mara’s history that made me melt and feel amazed. One of the things I love about the relationship between Mara and Norah is the overwhelming passion between them. The fear of losing, the need to be together, the immense love that grows in their hearts. When these two young lovers are together is like an explosion of exquisite and wonderful feelings that flood us readers. WOW! One of the best literary romances of all time.

The ending:
Okay, this is the part where I say.
YOU HAVE TO BE fucking KIDDING ME!!! HOW CAN THE BOOK ENDS THIS WAY??
Honestly, it was really hard to restrain myself to exploit those words in the first line.
Finally the secrets are revealed behind Mara! Not all, of course, but one that leaves you with your mouth open.
And then those last lines, dramatic, unexpected and cut-veins.
I assure you that you will not want to wait to read more.

Final Thoughts:
As said earlier. Mara Dyer is a story on the edge of fantasy and reality, with an elegant and addictive writing, and a plot with so much suspense that leaves you breathless.

Rock on! The author of October: Michelle Hodkin

Welcome to the celebration of my favorite books of this year.
Each day, I will be featuring my favorite book and author of each month. And at the end of this celebration you'll have the chance to win a hardback copy of a book by one of my favorite authors.

Okay, I just read The evolution of Mara Dyer a week ago. But Michelle Hodkin must to be in this list. So, the better month for that is October, when Mara Dyer 2 was realeased.

At the age of sixteen, Michelle Hodkin lost the rights to her soul in a poker game with pirates just south of Natchez. Shortly thereafter, she joined an acting troupe and traveled the world performing feats of wonder and mischief. She has been seen on stages nationwide and earned rave reviews for her one woman performance of Titus Andronicus before writing the New York Times bestselling Mara Dyer Trilogy. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer and its sequel, The Evolution of Mara Dyer are available now, and the third book in the trilogy, The Retribution of Mara Dyer, hits shelves Fall 2013. Michelle currently lives with her three pets and may or may not be a reliable narrator of her own life.
