Some Great Mysteries I've Read Lately

I've read some great thrillers and mysteries these last months! I've always been able to read any genre in the past, so I never thought I was a "mood reader" but lately I only wanted to read thrillers because they are fast-paced and I can read them in two or three days (that's super fast for me!)

These were my favorite ones, they make me want to read many more like them. So, if you haven't read them make sure to add them to your TBR. They won't disappoint you (I hope!)

Review: Replica by Lauren Oliver

Replica
by Lauren Oliver
My rating: 4 stars
Source: eARC provided for review. Thank you!
Summary:
Gemma has been in and out of hospitals since she was born. 'A sickly child', her lonely life to date has revolved around her home, school and one best friend, Alice. But when she discovers her father's connection to the top secret Haven research facility, currently hitting the headlines and under siege by religious fanatics, Gemma decides to leave the sanctuary she's always known to find the institute and determine what is going on there and why her father's name seems inextricably linked to it.
Amidst the frenzy outside the institute's walls, Lyra - or number 24 as she is known as at Haven - and a fellow experimental subject known only as 72, manage to escape. Encountering a world they never knew existed outside the walls of their secluded upbringing , they meet Gemma and, as they try to understand Haven's purpose together, they uncover some earth-shattering secrets that will change the lives of both girls forever...

****

Okay, I have to confess I’m one of the few people that didn’t find the format of this book amusing or surprising. That’s because I’ve already read a book like this, though it was a poetry book. That book was about the passions of the poet. One half about love. The other half about POLITICS! For God’s sake! Our politics sucks more than any politics in the whole world, so I have no idea why I read it.

Anyway, back to Replica.
I started with Gemma’s side, I read five chapters, but after those five chapters I needed a break because I found Gemma’s POV too slow and she was kind of whiny.
So I turned to Lyra’s side. I fell in love right away with her story. Lyra’s the replica. Her story begins with the rumor that someone escaped Heaven. We come to know how the replicas are treated, how is their life inside the Heaven Institute. And how her world is turned upside down when something terrible happens in the island.
Her story is heartbreaking and I loved how it reminded me Delirium. The awe of discovering the world and the beauty of discovering her feelings. Lyra and 72, her companion, are seeing the world outside Heaven for the first time. I loved Lauren Oliver’s writing about it. I loved how “pure” they seemed.
There were some twists and turns, some terrible revelations and a hopeful ending.

Then I went back to Gemma. And here’s when something went wrong.
You see, I loved Lyra’s story and I loved her and 72, but once the boring part of Gemma’s story ends, her story is the once that carried the most shocking revelations. I seriously wish I read her whole story first.
But since most of those revelations were hinted with Lyra’s POV, they weren’t too surprising anymore.
I even skimmed some paragraphs because I already knew some of those things.

I’m writing this to say that if you’re planning to read Replica, I’d recommend you read it alternating chapters, that way you’ll be discovering the twists and turns on both sides at the time. I wish I did that.  But if you want to read their separate stories, then start with Gemma.

Except for that, Replica was a great book. Lauren Oliver’s writing is neat and past paced. Every character, on both sides, is well developed and likable.
Some of the twists were surprising and shocking, but some others I already expected them.
I loved how this book felt like science fiction and contemporary thriller at the same time. It was highly enjoyable. That being said, I can’t wait to know what will happen in book 2!
I do recommend this book. I think both sci-fic and mystery readers will enjoy at least one part of the story.

What's new? Vanishing Girls by Lauren Oliver

Wow! it's almost a week since my last post and I really missed this blog and all the awesome blogs I read everyday.
It was a poor reading week for me, but yesterday, I found out about the new book by Lauren Oliver (thanks to GoodReads).
I remember I read somewhere about it before, but now it has a cover and synopsis, and it sounds great!
Check it out!

Expected publication: March 3rd 2015 by HarperCollins

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22465597-vanishing-girls?ac=1

New York Times bestselling author Lauren Oliver delivers a gripping story about two sisters inexorably altered by a terrible accident.
Dara and Nick used to be inseparable, but that was before the accident that left Dara's beautiful face scarred and the two sisters totally estranged. When Dara vanishes on her birthday, Nick thinks Dara is just playing around. But another girl, nine-year-old Madeline Snow, has vanished, too, and Nick becomes increasingly convinced that the two disappearances are linked. Now Nick has to find her sister, before it's too late.

In this edgy and compelling novel, Lauren Oliver creates a world of intrigue, loss, and suspicion as two sisters search to find themselves, and each other.

ARC Review: Panic by Lauren Oliver

Panic
Author: Lauren Oliver
Pages: 416
Buying links: Amazon/ B&N/ TBD
My Rating: 4.5 stars
Summary:
Panic began as so many things do in Carp, a dead-end town of 12,000 people in the middle of nowhere: because it was summer, and there was nothing else to do.
Heather never thought she would compete in Panic, a legendary game played by graduating seniors, where the stakes are high and the payoff is even higher. She’d never thought of herself as fearless, the kind of person who would fight to stand out. But when she finds something, and someone, to fight for, she will discover that she is braver than she ever thought.
Dodge has never been afraid of Panic. His secret will fuel him, and get him all the way through the game, he’s sure of it. But what he doesn't know is that he’s not the only one with a secret. Everyone has something to play for.
For Heather and Dodge, the game will bring new alliances, unexpected revelations, and the possibility of first love for each of them—and the knowledge that sometimes the very things we fear are those we need the most.

***I received this ARC in exchange of my honest review. Thank you!***

Panic is the new contemporary novel by Lauren Oliver.
I read Panic some months ago, exactly when I was approved to the e-ARC. By those days I was really thrilled to be approved to read this book, which I’ve been dying to read since I first heard about it.
And now I’m happy to say that it didn’t disappoint.

Panic is an action packed roller coaster. It’s narrated in dual POV from Heather and Dodge. They have different reasons to play the game, and it made the plot more interesting.
For starters, the first line of this book is really intriguing; it drew me in as soon as I understood what was happening.
Panic is not like the other Lauren Oliver books I read, except for the incredible writing and the well developed characters.
The first thing I realized while reading Panic is that the two narrators weren’t the “couple” of the book. Lauren Oliver created a different kind love story from what I was expecting. It wasn’t totally unexpected, either, but it was different and it made me like the book even more.
The romance wasn’t the main topic of the book, but when it came, I adored it.

The plot was entertaining and realistic, I can easily picture teenagers doing those kinds of stupid things because they’re too bored or they need the money.
It put me on the edge of my seat.
The fog of mystery in Panic, the challenges, the creators, and the game itself was well created. I was yearning to know more, to discover all the secrets.
Even though the ending wasn’t absolutely unexpected (I saw it coming), I liked the way the things ended. It fitted perfectly with all pieces of information that the author gave us throughout the book.

Panic is a wonderful standalone. It blew me away. It’s a fast paced read with amazing characters, a wonderful writing and a plot that will surprise you and leave you breathless.

“It was so strange, the way that life moved forward: the twists and the dead ends, the sudden opportunities. She supposed if you could predict or foresee everything that was going to happen, you’d lose the motivation to go through it all. The promise was always in the possibility.”

Rock On... The Author of February: Lauren Oliver

Welcome to the celebration of my favorite books of this year.
Each day, I will be featuring my favorite book and author of each month. And at the end of this celebration you'll have the chance to win a hardback copy of a book by one of my favorite authors.
That month I was the happiest girl alive. I got the chance to read my first ARC and guess what? It was PANDEMONIUM by Lauren Oliver. I adored Delirium, it broke my heart and became one of the main reasons why I love Dystopian books that much.
So, I read Pandemonium in one day! which is really fast for me, because I work and all. But a dear friend  of my mine lent it and I had to be fast. Honestly, I read it twice and ended up crying each time.
I just loved that book like a crazy. I was mad at Lauren Oliver (because of Alex) but I also was so happy that I jumped and danced in the end.
Just too good to be true.

Lauren Oliver comes from a family of writers and so has always (mistakenly) believed that spending hours in front of the computer every day, mulling over the difference between “chortling” and “chuckling,” is normal. She has always been an avid reader.

She attended the University of Chicago, where she continued to be as impractical as possible by majoring in philosophy and literature. After college, she attended the MFA program at NYU and worked briefly as the world’s worst editorial assistant, and only marginally better assistant editor, at a major publishing house in New York. Her major career contributions during this time were flouting the corporate dress code at every possible turn and repeatedly breaking the printer. Before I Fall is her first published novel.

She is deeply grateful for the chance to continue writing, as she has never been particularly good at anything else.

The Delirium Trilogy.
THEY SAY that the cure for Love will make me happy and safe forever. And I've always believed them. Until now.
Now everything has changed. Now, I'd rather be infected
with love for the tiniest sliver of a second than live a hundred years smothered by a lie.

The Spindlers
One night when Liza went to bed, Patrick was her chubby, stubby, candy-grubbing and pancake-loving younger brother, who irritated and amused her both, and the next morning, when she woke up, he was not. In fact, he was quite, quite different.
When Liza's brother, Patrick, changes overnight, Liza knows exactly what has happened: The spindlers have gotten to him and stolen his soul.
She knows, too, that she is the only one who can save him.
To rescue Patrick, Liza must go Below, armed with little more than her wits and a broom. There, she uncovers a vast world populated with talking rats, music-loving moles, greedy troglods, and overexcitable nids . . . as well as terrible dangers. But she will face her greatest challenge at the spindlers' nests, where she encounters the evil queen and must pass a series of deadly tests--or else her soul, too, will remain Below forever.

**********

Liesl & Po
Liesl lives in a tiny attic bedroom, locked away by her cruel stepmother. Her only friends are the shadows and the mice, until one night a ghost appears from the darkness. It is Po, who comes from the Other Side. Both Liesl and Po are lonely, but together they are less alone.
That same night, an alchemist's apprentice, Will, bungles an important delivery. He accidentally switches a box containing the most powerful magic in the world with one containing something decidedly less remarkable.
Will's mistake has tremendous consequences for Liesl and Po, and it draws the three of them together on an extraordinary journey.

Now, for the giveaway, you have the chance to win a Hardback copy of one of the books featured in this celebration.
Today's pick is.

You can win "Pandemonium" or if you already have it, then you can pick "the book of January" or another book of the ones I'll tell you the next days.
And don't forget to come back tomorrow to gain more entries.
