The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli

The Upside of Unrequited
by Becky Albertalli
Source: eARC provided for review.
My Rating: 5 stars
Summary:
Seventeen-year-old Molly Peskin-Suso knows all about unrequited love. No matter how many times her twin sister, Cassie, tells her to woman up, Molly can’t stomach the idea of rejection. So she’s careful. Fat girls always have to be careful.
Then a cute new girl enters Cassie’s orbit, and for the first time ever, Molly’s cynical twin is a lovesick mess. Meanwhile, Molly's totally not dying of loneliness—except for the part where she is. Luckily, Cassie's new girlfriend comes with a cute hipster-boy sidekick. If Molly can win him over, she'll get her first kiss and she'll get her twin back.
There's only one problem: Molly's coworker, Reid. He's a chubby Tolkien superfan with a season pass to the Ren Faire, and there's absolutely no way Molly could fall for him.
Right?

*****

I read Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda last year and I loved it, but… I loved The Upside of Unrequited a lot more! I had a huge smile on my face almost through the whole book. It’s one of the cutest contemporaries I’ve ever read. It’s right next to Anna and the French Kiss… and that’s one of my fave books ever.

You know, I’m a not-thin-not-fat person, and I could relate to Molly so much! She describes exactly how, while you don’t hate your body, you think everyone is going to do it. It’s extremely hard to be that self-conscious around boys and Molly made me remember how that can stop you from falling in love. This is the first time I read a book that describes that so well and gives a strong and positive message about loving yourself as you are.
It also describes perfectly how sad it is knowing you’re drifting apart from someone you love.
UPSIDE is one of the most diverse books I’ve read. And I loved it! It takes place in the days previous and after to the day same sex marriage becomes legal in the whole country. And guys, the joy I read in those chapters brought tears to my eyes.

The Upside of Unrequited is not only a cute and light read. It’s positive about everything. Sex positive. Body Positive. Relationship Positive. A bunch-of-things positive! (I’m sorry; my English is not that good yet).
And the romance was the cutest thing ever! I’m not only talking about Molly and Reid! Cassie and Mina and Paty and Nadine. Their romances were pinterest worthy.
Overall, The Upside of Unrequited was a fun contemporary with a relevant topic and the cutest characters. It’s a must read!

PS: There are some SimonVS, cameos. I didn’t even notice right away, but OMG!

Waiting on Wednesday: The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine

 What I'm waiting for...

“I don’t entirely understand how anyone gets a boyfriend. Or a girlfriend. It just seems like the most impossible odds. You have to have a crush on the exact right person at the exact right moment. And they have to like you back.”

What does a sixteen-year-old girl have to do to kiss a boy? Molly Peskin-Suso wishes she knew. She’s crushed on twenty-six guys…but has kissed exactly none. Her twin sister Cassie’s advice to “just go for it” and “take a risk” isn’t that helpful. It’s easy for her to say: she’s had flings with lots of girls. She’s fearless and effortlessly svelte, while Molly is introverted and what their grandma calls zaftig.

Then Cassie meets Mina, and for the first time ever, Cassie is falling in love. While Molly is happy for her twin, she can’t help but feel lonelier than ever. But Cassie and Mina are determined to end Molly’s string of unrequited crushes once and for all. They decide to set her up with Mina’s friend Will, who is ridiculously good-looking, flirty, and seems to be into Molly. Perfect, right? But as Molly spends more time with Reid, her cute, nerdy co-worker, her feelings get all kinds of complicated. Now she has to decide whether to follow everyone’s advice…or follow her own heart.
