ARC Review: Nevernight (The Nevernight Chronicle #1) by Jay Kristoff

Nevernight
by Jay Kristoff
Source: ARC provided by Harper Reach. Thank you!
My rating: 5 stars
Summary:
Destined to destroy empires Mia Covere is only ten years old when she is given her first lesson in death.
Six years later, the child raised in the shadows takes her first steps towards keeping the promise she made on the day that she lost everything.
But the chance to strike against such powerful enemies will be fleeting, so if she is to have her revenge, Mia must become a weapon without equal. She must prove herself against the deadliest of friends and enemies, and survive the tutelage of murderers, liars and demons at the heart of a murder cult.
The Red Church is no Hogwarts, but Mia is no ordinary student. The shadows loves her. And they drink her fear.

*****

Hi there! I hope you’re all have a great weekend. I’ve been off line these days because it’s been our holidays and I had two jobs, but now one of them ended and I’m able to read again. Yay!
So, first things first. I can finally share my thoughts about Nevernight by Jay Kristoff. Spoiler alert: I loved it.

Nevernight was an unexpected and mind-blowing start to a new series. At first, I had no idea it was an adult fantasy because when I shelved it, I found it in a YA section. So, this is my first adult fantasy and I couldn’t be any happier, it was everything I’ve been told. It was better.

I can't say too much about the plot because it was unique and if you haven’t read it, then you deserve to be surprised by it. There were so many unexpected twists and turns. It was an emotional roller coaster!
I loved the darkness in this book. It was bloody and gory. It was full of magic and action. Nevernight was an adventure I loved to live.

Jay Kristoff is a fantastic storyteller. I’ve read some reviews where people struggle with his writing style. And yes, I agree the beginning was a little slow, but hell, his words are poetic and atmospheric. The book even has some foot notes and they were perfect!
I cannot think of a single thing I didn’t like about Nevernight.

Mia is such a good character. I liked her stubbornness, her bravery. She was an assassin, but I was able to connect with her and understand her reasons.
And what can I say about Tric? I fell in love with him right away. Even if I knew this book wasn’t going to be about love.
Nevernight has a great cast of secondary characters, too and I liked them all. Bad and worse. I even loved Mister Kindly (the shadow cat) and Bastard (the horse).

It’s probably everybody said this already, but I’m going to say it again: Nevernight was bloody brilliant! I can’t wait for book two!
