My Review:
****
The
Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye is a beautifully magical read, perfect for fans of
fantasy and re-tellings.
I have
to say, the first thing I heard about The Crown’s Game was about some kind of
love triangle in the book, I don’t like books with love triangle, that’s why I
want to talk about it first: It was not a love triangle.
The
Crown’s Game is a magical duel between two enchanters and only the winner will
live. I was expecting gore and battles and big displays of abilities, but The
Crown’s Game was very different from what I expected, and that was good. The
magic in this book is subtle, is beautiful, is fascinating and delightful. As a
big fan of real life magicians and illusionist, The Crown’s Game felt a little
like a tv show about enchanters.
It has
everything I love about magic, including the awe of the people around them.
I know
some people had struggled with the book in the first chapters because there are
many POVs and that happens mostly in the beginning. It was a little difficult
to connect at first, because of that, but once you know a bit more about the
main characters you just can’t stop reading about them.
I had to
say my favorite thing about this book was the characters. I loved them all,
they were so well developed and different from each other. And of course I
loved the most Nikolai and Vika, the two enchanters. But Pasha was lovely, too.
The heir to the throne. Nikolai’s best friend.
The one who falls in love with Vika. I was dying to know how this was going to
turn out.
Another
thing I have to highlight is how wonderful was the world-building. It was
atmospheric and magical and realistic at once. I loved to read about this
Russia. It made me crave for more.
There
are some amazing twists and turns I was not expecting, a deadly creature luring
in the darkness, betrayals, secrets and magic and magic and magic.
Evelyn
Skye’s debut is a fantastic read and if you enjoy reading about magic and
Russian-inspired books, you are going to love this one.
