ARC Review: Girl Against the Universe by Paula Stokes

Girl Against the Universe
by Paula Stokes
Source: ARC provided by Publisher. Thank you!
My Rating: 5 stars
Summary:
Maguire knows she’s bad luck. No matter how many charms she buys off the internet or good luck rituals she performs each morning, horrible things happen when Maguire is around. Like that time her brother, father, and uncle were all killed in a car crash—and Maguire walked away with barely a scratch.
But then on her way out of her therapist’s office, she meets Jordy, an aspiring tennis star, who wants to help Maguire break her unlucky streak. Maguire knows that the best thing she can do for Jordy is to stay away, but staying away may be harder than she thought.
****

Girls Against The Universe by Paula Stokes is a wonderful read about self discovery, friendship and second chances.
I’ve been a fan of this author since I read The Art of Lanley, there is something so fresh about her writing and her characters that keep you turning pages until you reach the end. GATU wasn’t the exception.
I don’t know why I got the idea that this book was just funny and light, but the truth is that Girls Against The Universe is an emotional roller coaster. I can’t tell you how many times my eyes clouded with tears a few minutes after I was laughing like a maniac. I can’t tell you how much I missed that: connecting with characters, crying because of them.

GATU is about a survivor girl that thinks she’s cursed and keeps good luck charms everywhere to protect everyone from the danger she thinks she can cause.
Being someone who also felt that “survivor guilt” I’m so happy to tell you that this book is so accurate about the mental issue it touched. This book is so well done! Even though Maguire could’ve been a whining and dramatic girl in someone else’s hands, with Paula’s writing Maguire was authentic and amusing.

Can I tell you about Jordy now? He was such a sweetheart! I loved how lighthearted he was. I adored that his relationship with Maguire started as a light friendship. I adored that he never put any pressure over her.
Every character in this book was realistic and well done. I loved every one of them… Plus, I loved that for the first time in a long time I found a book without a popular-bitch-that-wanted-the-love-interest.
Sure, there was Kimber, the popular rich girl, but even she wasn’t a cliché.
And if that wasn’t enough, there is a lovely family bond, too.
Girl Against The Universe is wonderful read! It has a solid plot, unexpected twist, witty conversations and amazing characters. You wouldn’t want to miss this one!
