Pawn

Series: The Blackcoat Rebellion
Pages: 346

Summary:
YOU CAN BE A VII. IF YOU GIVE UP EVERYTHING.
For Kitty Doe, it seems like an easy choice. She can either spend her life as a III in misery, looked down upon by the higher ranks and forced to leave the people she loves, or she can become a VII and join the most powerful family in the country.
If she says yes, Kitty will be Masked—surgically transformed into Lila Hart, the Prime Minister's niece, who died under mysterious circumstances. As a member of the Hart family, she will be famous. She will be adored. And for the first time, she will matter.
There's only one catch. She must also stop the rebellion that Lila secretly fostered, the same one that got her killed …and one Kitty believes in. Faced with threats, conspiracies and a life that's not her own, she must decide which path to choose—and learn how to become more than a pawn in a twisted game she's only beginning to understand.

My thoughts.

Pawn by Aimée Carter is one of the best dystopian books I’ve read.
As a huge fan of dystopian books I'm always looking for something new, something I still haven’t found. Pawn gave me all that I needed. The surprising factor was always there; ready to get me on the edge of my seat. Aimée Carter’s writing blew me away! This story was phenomenal, original. There wasn't even a second where I got bored or stopped reading.

Are you more than the number on the back of your neck?

Certainly yes. Kittie Doe is a strong heroine. And not the kind of Heroine with arrows and swords. Her strength is mental and emotional. I liked the concept of people being ranked after a test. This is an original idea and the author developed it in a perfect and brilliant way.
And then, Kitti is Masked, transformed into Lila Hart, the Prime minister’s niece.

With a family coming to the power and all the intrigues Kitty has survive. Pawn is a fantastical roller-coaster. All the characters in this book were different. From Benji to Knox. From the III to the VII. I have never read a book like this. It took topics I’m not used to read in YA books. The romance, though, was something I didn’t really “feel”. But in this case it wasn’t important. I liked Benji and Kitty’s relationship, but since it started before the book, I couldn’t feel a real connection. I liked Benji, he was cute and sweet. However, even if this book doesn’t have a love triangle, there were times when I thought I was starting to like the idea of Knox (Lila’s fiancé) and Kitti together.Somehow, I feel like Aimée gave me the idea of an “open” relationship.

The writing style, the world building, the political factor, everything was well described. The incredible plot, the twist and turns, the surprising moments that left me jaw dropped. I loved every little part of Pawn. It’s been a long time since a dystopian book gave so many surprises in so little time. This is must read.

  1. Wow one of the best dystopias you've read? I'm definitely looking forward to this one now. I'm glad that Kitti is a strong protagonist. In all honesty, I didn't enjoy Aimee Carter's The Goddess Test so all these positive reviews of Pawn are making me want to pick up the book.

  3. I really loved this one too! I liked how she didn't do the shocks for the shock sake but they were great and added so much to the book and the story! I can't wait to see how it continues on the next book!
    Great review!

  4. Glad that you enjoyed this-I had a lot of trouble connecting with the characters and plot so it didn't really stand out for me.
