Book review: Black City by Elizabeth Richards

Goodreads AVG Rating: 3.78
Pages: 384
Summary:
In a city where humans and Darklings are now separated by a high wall and tensions between the two races still simmer after a terrible war, sixteen-year-olds Ash Fisher, a half-blood Darkling, and Natalie Buchanan, a human and the daughter of the Emissary, meet and do the unthinkable—they fall in love. Bonded by a mysterious connection that causes Ash’s long-dormant heart to beat, Ash and Natalie first deny and then struggle to fight their forbidden feelings for each other, knowing if they’re caught, they’ll be executed—but their feelings are too strong.

When Ash and Natalie then find themselves at the center of a deadly conspiracy that threatens to pull the humans and Darklings back into war, they must make hard choices that could result in both their deaths

My POV

My feelings.
It’s been a while since I don’t feel so confused about a book I loved. Yes, that means that I loved Black City, but my feelings were a war between my love for the plot and my displeasure for some characters. Since the first time I saw the cover of this book and read the stunning summary, I knew I have to read it. I just knew it!! Then, my bestie came up and gave me a copy of it, and I started reading it, even before the others in the top of my TBR pile. See, I’m not going to say that I’m not happy for that decision, but I really wished the book was 5 stars or even a Special rating and now, I don’t have that.

The Plot.
Stunning, marvelous, incredible, powerful and awesome. The plot was so good, that I think this was one of the most perfect-created worlds I ever read in a book. The idea of the different kinds of darklings living on the other side is really good. Plus, the descriptions, the development was so clear, and unexpected. Seriously.
I loved the summary when I first saw it, but I never imagine the world-building is going to be that epic. Gosh, I don’t even know what to say, I loved every part of this book, the action, the drama, the unexpected twists (at least they were unexpected for me). Wow! Incredible!

The characters.
Ash and Natalie: And now is when the thing gets dirty. No dirty, really. I mean, this is the other side of my feelings about this book. You saw, I said all the things I loved about the plot, but the "reactions" of this two characters’ were something that left me stressed and wanting to scream. For me, they were a little bit too immature. They were strong as well; I’m not going to deny it. But in certain scenes their reactions were so… unnatural. I wanted to kick their pretty butts. I don’t hated them, but I don’t loved them, either.
Evangeline: I really loved this girl. She was a bitch but I loved her. She was so realistic so genuine. She’s hurt but does know what she wants and she accepts her true nature. Though her last reactions in the book were a little lame.
The emissary: Brave and bad woman. I liked her. At least her attitude last till the end.

The love story.
And if I didn’t like the main characters was for an obvious reason: The love story.
When I say that they were strong as well, I’m talking about other things, like they working together or separate, however. But not in the romantic moments. The insta-love was TOO insta. I can’t believe in 2 people that after 2 weeks are so in love that can’t live without each other. Sorry, I just can’t believe! I would love to see them in love in the next book, because then, I suppose they at least “meet each other” I don’t think I ever like a couple that are so in love when they don’t know anything about themselves.

The ending.
Epic!
Maybe this was the only part where I really enjoyed the romance. It was sweet and selfless. Which give me a hope that maybe I’ll like Ash and Natalie in the next book.
The last scene was so, so good. Of course, like always I’d love something more dramatic and heartbreaking, but that’s just my sadistic side. Because I even cried during the last chapter. Man, it was so awesome!

Final thoughts:
I know I’ve been rambling, but as I said in the beginning, I feel confused about Black City, I loved but I’m not happy about some of the things in it. That doesn’t mean that the book isn’t good, because it is. And if you like the insta-love, then this book will be perfect for you.

  1. I really like the concept from this book and I'm happy that the plot is so good. The only thing that bothers me are the characters and the insta-love.. I hope that I can overlook it, because I was expecting so much from this book. Great review! :)
